Hong Kong Neon

“With this monumental and unmistakably unique archive that is the book and the film Hong Kong Neon, Pascal Greco keeps the flame of an entire culture alive. Elegant and respectful work, unmistakably social and historical.” Fisheye

“The Polaroid and its size confines the essence of these neon signs and turns them into independent narratives. Poetic. Aesthetics.” 24 heures

“Pascal Greco pays tribute to these fluorescent signs, 95% of which have already disappeared.” Vice

Hong Kong Neon is handsome, heavy and freighted with significance.” Monocle

The neon signs of Hong Kong have been part of the city’s visual identity for decades.
Unfortunately in the last fifteen years, 95% of the neon signs have been removed. This photographic work is made with a format that has also disappeared: instant photography, type 100 (Polaroid 125i, 669 & Fujifilm FP-100c). The project was made from 2012 to 2019.
More than 80% of the neon signs in the book no longer exist.

The book is a tribute to the visual heritage, design, typography and people who created and shaped these neon signs and also to Hong Kong and also to Hong Kong that is entering an uncertain future.

A contemplative documentary, that I directed, about those neon signs and the people who made them, Master Wu, Master of neon light manufacture and Master Fung Siu Wah, Master of Chinese calligraphy, will be only availble on a private streaming link via a QR Code in the book.
